First time gym fears

The time of contemplation is over, you've signed up for a gym membership and today is your first day.

You successfully negotiated the changing room, and have deciphered the combination of the lockers....

And step into the gym......

On one side, rows and rows of treadmills, bikes, and contraptions that look like they could leave you blue in the face and gasping for breath.Upon these are mounted lycra clad, trim, glamorous, sporty "experts"

The other side harbours the freeweights area... If anything this is even more intimidating than the other bit!

The clanging and clattering noises that seem to boom out from that zone appear to herald the end of any unwary novice like you, who might drift in there by mistake.

This zone is populated predominantly by Huge men, with muscles upon their muscles. Veins snaking up their arms like a road map of Great Britain, and vests that hang from shoulders that have been carved from granite.

In your head you are feeling completely out of your depth. Maybe you want to turn round and retreat back to the safety of the life you so recently left behind...... But wait. let me tell you a secret.

EVERYONE, yes all those expert looking gym rats and even the PTs and staff felt exactly the same way as you when they first entered the gym!

Let me repeat that

EVERYONE, yes all those expert looking gym rats and even the PTs and staff felt exactly the same way as you when they first entered the gym!

So what's my point?

Remember the moment when you gathered up all that motivation and chose to change your life? Well do it again. Remember why you're doing it, remember everyone there (including me) has felt that way. Hold your head high, stride on in there and go for it!

Please if you are unsure of anything, ask a PT (preferably one who isn't training anyone at that specific moment in time)

Personal trainers ....and I speak for all good ones, will be more than happy to help you out.

Cheers people!

Pete Kirkham.
